The late fight back of the boys in red was not enough to hold the men in blue as they successfully defended their opponent and become champions once again at Wembley. The goals from Ramires and Drogba helped Chelsea lift the prestigious FA Cup for the fourth times in six seasons.
The blues prevailed in the battle of pride and prestige over the reds and coloured the stadium with the possibility of bringing the Champions League title to the city. The result 2-1 will have a big effect on their mind and surely provide an extra boost for the may 19 final.
Chelsea started the match in firm control and led with the 11th minute brilliant strike by Ramires. He collected the ball from Juan Mata and shook off Jose Enrique’s challenge when he fired a low ball to the left side of Reina.
The blues took a stronghold for a comfortable victory when Chelsea’s favourite son Drogba scored an early second half goal with left foot holding a defender on his shoulder. The stadium had erupted in blaster with this double lead and sang in chorus the victory song. But it was cut shortly when Andy Carroll came as substitute and scored by fooling the defenders and Cech. The stadium was silenced as Carroll had brought Liverpool back in the contention for the title.
Carroll and Suarez both tried hard and had their shot at the goal but could not mange to put behind Cech as he was outstanding with his cover up and positioning. The crucial 73rd minute save proved his worth and trustworthiness as a goalkeeper. The game changed with Liverpool attacking and suddenly Chelsea was seen defending to seal the match.
The best chance for Liverpool came when Carroll was left unmarked and could equalise but instead he headed the ball over the post. The final minutes saw the desperation of the Liverpool boys puling one back, though it never happened as the defender took full control of the ball and it lasted till the penultimate whistle was blown.
The night was hysteric and historic as well when Didier Drogba became the only player in 141 years history of FA Cup to score in four finals. The English defender John Terry Shorty followed with his record of captaining the four finals and lifting the pristine silver FA Cup four times.
Who have thought that the two months old manager Roberto di Matteo would add another glory on his cap? First he took his team to Champions League final and now tossed the boys on the path of glory. The countless emotions and happiness said it brightly. The team looked happy and healthy under the leadership of this young Italian.
The task of retaining these emotions and sentiments is on the shoulders of Chelsea boys. The ultimate aim should be to bring the mother of all cups into the island nation. The fans want their share of joy. The missed penalty kick of john terry on a night is an old man’s song. It is no longer sung. The world does not wish to see a repetition of that night rather a reception of blues on the streets of London.
