World is definitely coming to an end this December. Not because the Mayans said it would, but because Stewart Downing scored for the first time since his much maligned move to Anfield. And that too with his weaker foot, relatively that is, causing a few dramatic changes within the cosmic assembly of the universe. The former Villa winger, who was merely a spectator with the best seat in the stadium for most of the last two seasons, finally saw more action that the man refereeing the match. The nouveau riche from Russia has yet another name on the shopping list for now. As far as the Scousers are concerned, in King Kenny you should have trusted.

A few loose purse strings in the Middle East, some retail therapy of a global nature and an incompetent QPR may have helped Manchester City conquer England last year. Europe however, is too much of a mad house even for money men from the blue half of Manchester. Before Cruyff stole the entire library and moved to Nou Camp, Ajax was the finest footballing academy in Europe. So it was time for some sweet irony when City learned a fine lesson in football from the mother of all schools. All looks to be over for the Blues as far as Europe is concerned. Now back to familiar territory, more Dirhams and a Dubai shopping festival.

Barcelona did to Celtic what Rafael Nadal used to once do to a then Grand Slam virgin Andy Murray – offering a brief glimpse of victory in the beginning, a glimmer of hope as the game progressed, and a lethal and deciding blow towards the end. And as far as the English press is concerned, this is how their article might have begun – “The brave men from Great Britain took a surprise lead and shook the greatest team on the planet showing the famous British fighting spirit.” And ended thus – “Though they put up a brave fight, the Scots meekly surrendered towards the end against the mighty Spaniards, in a customary fashion we’ve all grown used to over the recent past.”
