Luis Suarez said he was ready to leave Liverpool, citing the English media as one of the main reasons. He says he needs a change of environment to rebuild his image.
Ladbrokes have Suarez odds on to leave Liverpool for Real Madrid this summer. If you fancy a flutter, be sure to use the Ladbrokes promotion code MAXIMUM BONUS.
There is so much to talk about here. First of all, has Suarez really been harassed by paparazzi during his time in England? Ask yourself this – how often do you see the Liverpool striker in the paper?
Perhaps there has been extra attention on him recently, but that tends to happen when you bite a fellow professional. Whatever Suarez says, he has been at fault for any media bothering him.
And yet Liverpool have stuck by him throughout. Their image has been dragged through the mud at times as they publically back their player. Their reward? He wants to move on.
Well isn’t that just great. Liverpool have received an incredible amount of criticism for their backing of Suarez during the racism row and the biting incident. That’s racism row and biting incident.
The very least Suarez can do is grit his teeth (pun intended) and give his all for the club, at least for one more season. After all, Liverpool are going places under Brendan Rodgers.
If Suarez leaves though – he is their top scorer and provides world-class quality – it would be a case of two steps forward on one back. This is incredibly frustrating, particularly for the fans.
You could perhaps argue that Liverpool have done rather well without Suarez this season. When he has been missing, the likes of Daniel Sturridge has stepped up his game and performed superbly.
If Liverpool are to compete for major honours though – as well as a top four finish – Suarez is the type of player they need. You cannot replace his quality very easily.
Let’s address another issue – the way Suarez broke the news. It was on an international press conference and he wasn’t even speaking English. How much respect does this guy lack?
You can certainly see things getting very ugly (pun intended) when Suarez returns to England. The club will be furious by how the man they pay extremely well has gone about things.
Then, if they do end up selling Suarez, they can demand a massive transfer fee. After all, if Fernando Torres was worth £50m and with Ladbrokes quoting Liverpool are also looking for £50m once again for Suarez, it may discourage a number of clubs from bidding on the player.
