The future of Wayne Rooney has been much discussed (again) this week with the striker reportedly making it clear that he would like to leave the club.
This news broke after Ferguson’s retirement announcement and it is though the striker went to the Scotsman to discuss leaving Old Trafford.
As was the case three years ago, it appears that Rooney is keen for a new challenge in order to rediscover his best form. After all, although he has still been valuable to United, the spark isn’t there.
The 27-year-old is at a crossroads for his career and wants to take on something new, away from Manchester United and potentially from the Premier League.
In many ways, you can’t blame him. Rooney has won everything possible with United and isn’t content to just coast along. The last thing he wants is to completely fall out of favour with the club.
With around five years of his best football to come, Rooney doesn’t want to waste a second. If he joins a new team with new ideas, perhaps he can be back to his world-class best for club and country.
Manchester United fans should wish him a fond farewell if the time comes for him to leave as well. You never quite know what David Moyes has planned for him, but if Rooney goes he should do so with fond memories.
Consistently performing at the highest level, Rooney has always given his all for United and played his part in a few different teams. While Cristiano Ronaldo, Ruud Van Nistelrooy and others have been and gone – Rooney has stayed.
Since joining in August 2004, he has scored 141 Premier League goals for the Red Devils. You don’t get too many players these days that deliver the goods this consistently for the same club.
It would be a real shame if Rooney left under a dark cloud. The fact is, he wants a new challenge. What value is it to United if he stays when his heart isn’t in it as much as it should be?
The fact is, this summer could be the perfect time for Rooney to move on.
With Ferguson being replaced by Moyes, it is a new era for the Red Devils and the England man’s departure can be part of the transition.
United will get plenty of money for Rooney too and definitely look to make profit on the £20m they paid nine years ago. Then, at this stage of his career, the player will still have top clubs after him.
Let’s just hope that in years to come, Rooney’s time at Manchester United is looked upon in a positive light. Given all his effort and all his goals, it would be a real shame if not.
Arsenal are currently 2/1 to favorites to sign Rooney even with major interest from abroad. Get free football tips here to stay ahead of the bookies this year.
